If you keep driving to the bottom of the North Island, on the East side that is, at the end of the road you find a pub. The beach is too wild to go swimming but people head off in their boats to fish at sunset and everyone else goes to the hotel for a drink.

With a restaurant, tables in the magnificent sun and a reasonable tariff for an old-style hotel room we booked in for the night.

Where else but New Zealand (or perhaps the developing world) would you get such illuminating directions on how to use your mobile phone?

Or be given such educative, well-thumbed reading material with your hastily cleaned room?

Just as well the sunset was priceless.
