blow me over

(Photo filched from AP, via The Age)

This is Katrina. Isn’t she pretty? She’s already whipping up a storm in the oil market, pushing crude to over $US70 a barrel. Wonder what else she’s got in store.

(Haven’t gone yet. Just caught up in a frenzy of spring cleaning. Most exhausting!)

Whenever I hear of a hurricane/cyclone/tornado with a woman's name, I am reminded of the classi saying from Kent Brockman on the Simpsons:

"And if you think naming a destructive storm after a woman is sexist, you obviously have never seen the gals grabbing for items at a clearance sale."

As Homer says, "It's funny 'cause it's true!"

Isn't it amazing that 'authorities' issued an evacuation notice, without organising a place for evacuees to go to, transport for them to get there, and food for the duration. The new problem is that nobody can return for quite a while. Thousands need food, laundry, medicine, schooling, and something to occupy their time. The Army knows how to do this ..oops, they're all away in Iraq.

Howdy, am back :) Got to watch a bit of the media coverage while i was away on BBC and CNN (it was interesting to compare the two, you can imagine which one was least complementary as to how the nation was handling it). Am sure the slow official response to the catastrophe had NOTHING to do with the predominant colour of those left behind, or that the country was under resourced due to invading other countries. No, no absolutely no connection.

What i love most of all is that Chavez, while admonishing Bush for being off riding horses while the South fell apart, has offered oil aid to the US!
